Enabled through the WISE RTP program, the platform provides researchers and industry with access to advanced equipment for studying surfaces, wear and material performance. The initiative is led by Professor Staffan Jacobson and Professor Urban Wiklund.
Wise-EST aims to support the green transition by enabling research that extends the lifetime of materials and improves resource efficiency. Tribology, the science of friction, wear and lubrication plays a key role in developing durable, energy-efficient solutions across sectors such as manufacturing, energy and transport.
The inauguration featured presentations on the platform’s capabilities, equipment and applications from researchers and industry representatives, as well as a broader perspective on its role in Swedish research infrastructure. Participants also visited the laboratory facilities to experience the new environment firsthand.
For Staffan Jacobson, Wise-EST is about creating the conditions for research that can contribute to the green transition.
“With these test environments, we want to enable the green transition in practice. The vision is to extend the service life of materials, components and products, and to make advanced equipment accessible to many users,” says Staffan Jacobson, Professor at the Department of Materials Science, Uppsala University.
