Professor Johanna Rosén of Linköping University will become Director of the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE) on 1 January 2027, succeeding Professor Magnus Berggren, who will take up the role of Executive Director of the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

Researchers and industry representatives will gather at Uppsala University on 6 November 2026 for the one-day workshop, From Mineral to Functional Magnet.

What if the battery in an electric vehicle could do more than store energy? What if it could also help carry the load? This question is at the heart of the research of WISE alumni Richa Chaudhary, whose work focuses on structural batteries and multifunctional materials.

The authors stress the need to report sustainability metrics alongside performance, assess whole devices rather than just the active layer, and look at the full life cycle, from sourcing to disposal. The final goal is a field in which “sustainable” means something measurable that other labs can test and build on.
