WIRA-ICME
WIRA-ICME (Integrated Computational Materials Engineering) is led by Saab and gathering partner companies GKN Aerospace, Volvo Cars, Sandvik and IMA to focus on enhancing the development, testing and implementation of new structural materials.
Vision
To shorten time and lower cost required for the exploration and qualification of sustainable materials.
This is achieved through combination of physics-based simulations, artificial intelligence, and high-throughput physical testing, forming an integrated and data-driven approach that connects digital and experimental material evaluation processes.
Objectives
To accelerate the use of data driven methods and AI to enhance development of new materials and improved existing materials.
To strengthen the research and technology infrastructures for academic and industrial researchers
To increase use of testing-level platforms and industrial platforms to bring new research results faster to industrially relevant production.
Research challenges
- Further develop and integrate existing process and material modelling tools into a comprehensive, unified framework
- Employ these models as surrogate models for training AI approaches
- Develop experimental methodologies and conduct targeted material testing campaigns for efficient and informative data generation
- Apply the developed methodology to guide future material development and enable the introduction of sustainable material systems based on circular raw materials
Targeted applications
- Composite materials and components for aircraft structures
- Additively manufactured metals for aero engines
- High-pressure die casting (HPDC) of aluminium and magnesium
- Metal cutting inserts used in machining
