Study Visit to Kiruna Showcases Science, Industry, and Cultural Heritage in Northern Sweden

During our recent study visit to Kiruna in northern Sweden, participants had the opportunity to explore cutting-edge research, large-scale industry, and unique cultural experiences in an inspiring and unforgettable setting.

The visit included fascinating insights into advanced research at LTU, as well as space and atmospheric studies at IRF and EISCAT, where participants learned more about space science, auroral research, and the importance of northern Sweden as a hub for international space research. At the Esrange Visitor Centre, the students also gained a deeper understanding of satellite technology, rocket and balloon launches, and the future of space exploration.

A highlight of the trip was the visit to LKAB, where participants not only learned about large-scale mining operations, but also had the opportunity to go underground and visit the mine itself. This experience provided firsthand insight into sustainable mining, critical raw materials, and the important role mining plays in the green transition.

The program also offered memorable cultural experiences, including a visit to the Icehotel and the extraordinary architecture and art created entirely from ice and snow. At Nutti Sámi Siida, the students learned more about Sámi culture, traditions, and reindeer herding, with the unique opportunity to meet and feed reindeer.

“The study trip broadened my perspective on how theory connects to real-world materials applications. It also provided a valuable opportunity to expand my academic network and share insights with fellow WISE students,” says Trung Le, PhD Student at Uppsala University.

Together, these experiences created a program that combined research, innovation, sustainability, and cultural understanding, leaving participants with both new knowledge and lasting memories from the stunning landscapes of northern Sweden. This study trip to Kiruna will be offered again in spring 2027.
