WISE Congratulates the 2025 Nobel Laureates in Physics

—Quantum phenomena and materials science have once again demonstrated unique phenomena with the potential to benefit society, says Professor Olle Eriksson at Uppsala University, WISE Co-Director and Chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics.

WISE warmly congratulates John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis, who were jointly awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics on October 7 for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electrical circuit.

On October 7, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that the Nobel Prize in Physics 2025 was awarded to:

  •  John Clarke, University of California, Berkeley, USA
  •  Michel H. Devoret, Yale University, New Haven, CT, and University of California, Santa Barbara, USA
  •  John M. Martinis, University of California, Santa Barbara, USA, and Qolab, Los Angeles, CA, USA

The laureates conducted groundbreaking experiments demonstrating quantum mechanical tunnelling and quantised energy levels in an electrical circuit large enough to beheld in the hand, an achievement that bridges the gap between the quantum and macroscopic worlds.

—Quantum phenomena and materials science have once again demonstrated unique
phenomena with the potential to benefit society, says Professor Olle Eriksson at Uppsala University, WISE Co-Director and Chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics.

Transistors in modern computer microchips are a well-known example of quantum technology already transforming our daily lives. The discoveries recognised by this year’s Nobel Prize pave the way for the next generation of quantum technologies, including quantum cryptography, quantum computing, and quantum sensing, fields that promise to revolutionise information security, computation, and precision measurement.

—It is naturally timely that WISE has just agreed to go forth with joint projects in the field of quantum technologies and materials science, says Professor Magnus Berggren, Director of WISE.
