Insights from Danial Mazhar, Poster Winner at Welcome Meeting 2024
We have talked to the poster winner of Welcome Meeting 2024, Danial Mazhar, PhD student at Stockholm University and who participates in a WISE research project led by Jiayin Yuan, Professor at Stockholm University.
What is your experience of Welcome Meeting 2024?
The Welcome Meeting was an incredible experience where I learned about WISE’s rich collaborative environment, access to world-class facilities, and the various thematic areas, including energy and circularity, which directly relate to my research interests. The introduction to the interdisciplinary WISE platform and its sustainability-centered approach was particularly inspiring. The engaging 3D science movie and interactions during the poster session made the event even more memorable.
What is your research about and your poster?
My research centers on sustainable atmospheric water harvesting, which is directly connected to the thematic area of climate and environment at WISE. My poster, titled “Porous Thermoresponsive Poly (ionic liquid)/Graphene Oxide Composites for Atmospheric Water Harvesting (ProWater),” showcases the development of metal-free, energy-efficient materials. These materials are designed to capture water vapor from the air and release it using solar energy, providing a renewable and sustainable solution to global water scarcity issues, particularly in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6).
Why did you choose this research area?
Water scarcity is a critical global issue, especially in regions like Asia where large populations are affected. Aligning with WISE’s focus on climate and environment, I chose to work on atmospheric water harvesting because it offers a sustainable solution to a pressing global problem. My research also ties into the broader circularity and replacement area, as it focuses on developing eco-friendly materials for a more sustainable future.
Have you always wanted to be a researcher?
Yes, I have always been curious and passionate about science, particularly in finding solutions to real-world problems. Growing up, I was fascinated by the way scientific discoveries impact daily life. My research within WISE allows me to work on breakthrough materials that contribute to sustainability, which is something I’ve always aspired to do. The interdisciplinary nature of WISE, combined with its focus on high-impact research, makes it an ideal place for me to pursue my childhood dream.
Why did you choose to apply to do research for WISE?
WISE provides a unique interdisciplinary platform that focuses on some of the most pressing scientific challenges of our time, particularly in the field of Materials Science for Sustainability. WISE’s strategic pillars—design, modeling, synthesis, processing, structures, properties, and performance—allow me to delve into cutting-edge research on energy and environmental sustainability. Moreover, the program’s commitment to breakthrough discoveries and high-risk, high-reward projects is highly motivating. WISE’s combination of infrastructure, collaboration, and its dedication to sustainable development aligns perfectly with my career goals.
Jiayin and Daniel, how has it been at WISE so far?
Danial: It has been a highly productive and inspiring journey so far at WISE. The access to state-of-the-art facilities and the collaborative nature of the WISE community have provided the perfect environment for impactful research. The focus on sustainability and the strategic themes, such as energy, circularity, and climate, have enriched our work and inspired new directions. WISE’s focus on interdisciplinary approaches ensures that we are not just tackling individual problems but contributing to holistic solutions that can drive global sustainability efforts.
Jiayin Yuan: It is a fantastic experience as a PI in the WISE program. There is an extremely inspiring atmosphere on materials science for sustainable development. It collects top-level PhD students, postdocs and researchers from both academia and industry together to catalyze fresh ideas and innovative topics that will otherwise not come at all or come at a rather later stage. With the support of this program, Sweden will strengthen its international leading role in materials research for a better sustainable future.

-While XPS is straightforward to use for metals, it poses profound challenges for insulators, which can lead to inaccurate spectra interpretation. The exponential growth in XPS publications has also increased the risk of dissemination of potentially erroneous results. This is a serious concern because scientific progress depends on reliable and reproducible data, say Profs. Greczynski and Hultman from Linköping University.
