Brief description of RTP
The Thermo Fisher Scientific Iliad Ultra STEM at Linköping University is a state-of-the-art analytical scanning transmission electron microscope designed for atomic scale investigation of advanced materials. It can provide direct insight into how atomic structure, defects, interfaces, chemical bonding and electronic structure determine material performance. This is relevant across WISE areas including energy materials, catalysts, 2D materials, semiconductors, sustainable manufacturing, and materials degradation.

For the Swedish research community and for WISE, the instrument provides access to capabilities that are highly specialized and difficult to maintain at individual laboratories. Its combination of atomic resolution imaging, advanced spectroscopy, low dose capabilities and flexible accelerating voltage is particularly valuable for beam-sensitive and compositionally complex materials. Through ARTEMI, these capabilities are made nationally available. The instrument also provides an important platform for the emerging intersection between materials science and AI: large, multidimensional datasets can be combined with machine learning for automated analysis, defect identification and data-driven materials discovery.

In this sense, the Iliad Ultra should not be viewed simply as a new microscope, but as a national research capability connecting advanced characterization, materials science, data science and AI. It can therefore contribute both to individual WISE research projects and to the long term development of a Swedish research community capable of exploiting the next generation of data driven electron microscopy.
