The initiative aims to encourage students to pursue doctoral studies in the field of materials science for sustainability.

Selected students will receive a stipend and during the final year of their Master’s studies become affiliated with a WISE-connected research group. The WISE Research Master’s Thesis project will be conducted in a relevant research environment, under the supervision of an active professor or senior researcher. In addition to completing their research-based thesis, students are expected to participate in selected activities within the research environment and may also be offered advanced courses that can be credited toward future doctoral studies.

Key Facts

  • Up to 200 stipends of 75 kSEK will be awarded during the periods 2026–2027 and 2027–2028 to students enrolled in engineering or natural science master’s programs at the seven WISE partner universities, or at four universities with excellent research groups affiliated with WISE
  • Each of the seven WISE partner universities may award up to twelve stipends each, per selection round. Affiliated research groups of excellence at four selected universities are allocated up to four stipends each per award round
  • The maximum budget for the WISE Research Master Thesis initiative amounts to 15 million SEK
  • Students will complete a 30 credit Master’s thesis in the form of a research project and spend up to one year as a member of a research group at a WISE affiliated university.

The new initiative represents a significant investment in developing the next generation of researchers in materials science for sustainability, strengthening Sweden’s long-term research capacity in one of the most critical fields for a sustainable future.
