Research question

In a conventional solar cell, a large part of the energy received from the sun is lost to heat. The concept of a hot-carrier solar cells aims to use this heat from so-called “hot carriers” as an additional resource, potentially enhancing the achievable efficiency and performance of solar cells. Hot-carrier solar cells thus hold significant potential for highly efficient, low-cost solar cells, but so far have been challenging to implement in traditional layered structures. Recent results indicate that nanowires hold considerable potential for the realization of solar energy harvesting based on hot carriers. Building on these promising initial results, this project will systematically develop key elements needed for a successful implementation of this concept.

Sustainability aspects

The research aim is to identify an avenue to high-performance hot-carrier solar cells, with synthesis of tailor-made heterostructure nanowires as a key requirement. This research contributes to achieve sustainable development goal 7: affordable and clean energy.
