Prof Madhavi is a Professor in School of Materials Science & Engineering at Nanyang
Technological University (NTU), Singapore. She is the co-Director of SCARCE (Singapore-CEA
alliance for research in Circular economy), a joint lab, in collaboration with French Alternative
energies and atomic energy commission (CEA, France) focusing on recycling of e-waste.
Prof. Madhavi is a world leading authority in Sustainable Batteries and Circular economy. She
is one of the highly cited researchers worldwide (Clarivate) (2019-2024). Prof Madhavi ‘s
research focuses on advanced materials for sustainable circular economy with an emphasis
on novel energy storage solutions and recycling of e-waste and lithium-ion batteries. She
focusses on synthesis, fabrication and application of nanoscale materials/architectures in
improving the performance of electrochemical energy storage devices such as advanced
lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, sodium ion batteries, multivalent aqueous Zn / Al
batteries, Structural batteries. Her research is also on recycling of lithium ion batteries ewaste
by novel hydrometallurgical techniques towards a closed loop approach. Madhavi has
published over 389 high impact research papers and has 30 patents. Her research work has
been cited worldwide with total citations over 42,214 (Hirch (H)-index = 114).
She has won several prestigious awards including 2019 Asia’s top Sustainability Superwomen,
L’Oreal for Women in Science National Fellowships, Underwriters laboratories-ASEAN-US
Science Prize for Women, Great Women of Our Time given by Singapore Women’s Weekly
Magazine and NRF Investigatorship award awarded to top scientists in Singapore by National
Research Foundation (NRF). She is among an elite group of researchers worldwide who have
been recognized for exceptional research performance demonstrated by the production of
multiple highly cited research papers which rank in the top 1% by citations for field in Web of
Science. She has won the “Nanyang Excellence in Research” award (NTU) in 2014 and the
“Nanyang Excellence in Teaching” award (NTU) twice in 2012 and 2017. In addition, she has
also won the teacher of the year school award (NTU) twice in 2013 and 2016. She has secured
several industry funded projects both nationally and internationally including Energizer (USA),
Arkema (France/USA), Rolls Royce(UK), BMW (Germany), Johnson Matthey (UK), Bosch
(Germany), Dura power (Singapore), JNC (Japan), Elbit systems (Israel), Regentech Pte Ltd.
(Singapore), Gotion (Singapore). She graduated with Masters from Indian Institute ofTechnology (IIT, Madras/Chennai, India) and did her PhD in National University of Singapor (Singapore).
She leads the Energy research Institute at NTU (ERI@N, 200 people) towards enabling
sustainable energy transition through research, innovation and translation with industry
collaborations. She played a vital role in establishing NTU’s sustainability manifesto goals and
setting up NTU Sustainability office as its Executive Director. Her dedicated efforts not only
led to NTU globally winning sustainability excellence awards (ISCN, Eurocham) but also
propelled NTU QS sustainability ranking from 129 (2022) to 50 (2023). She also successfully
established world’s first e-waste recycling R& D centre in Singapore (SCARCE), a key
partnership with CEA (France). She served as Director-GAIN, for 3 years to accelerate NTUindustry
engagement through inter-disciplinary and inter-company collaboration.
Owing to her extensive contributions , she is invited to serve as member in key Singapore
Government panels including Committee of Government Scientific Advisors (CGSA, National
Research Foundation (NRF)), External Advisory Panel member for Environmental
Sustainability (EAPES, Ministry of Defence (MINDEF)/ Singapore Armed Forces (SAF)), and EVe
(LTA) board member. She also served in (SDG) Global Council on Energy Efficiency at COP28.

Explore invited professors under the WISE program
In this page, you will meet the WISE Invited Professors. The WISE invited professor (WIP) program is part of the recruitment and outreach activities of WISE and targets to establish research connections internationally. The purpose can be both to strengthen excellent research environments and to introduce new contacts and research areas into the Swedish research landscape. Through the WIP program, WISE will collaborate with internationally competitive research environments, enabling crucial networking. This page will be continuously updated.
