Research question

My research is focused on the characterization of energy materials and devices at Large Scale Facilities. I employ neutron and synchrotron techniques to unravel the reaction and degradation mechanisms in electrodes and electrolytes, mostly in the field of rechargeable batteries. Particularly I develop worflows for mutimodal multitechniques applied towards a more holistic understanding of M-ion batteries. By using advanced tools as SWAXS-CT and fast scanning microbeam techniques combined to spectroscopy and nanotomography, we unravel correlations between structure, chemical environment, electronic properties and morphology in a variety of systems including Silicon-graphite anodes, Hard Carbon anodes, lamellar oxide cathodes, polymers, and composite electrolytes/catholytes.

Sustainability aspects

Batteries are key towards a decarbonized society. Sustainable-by-design materials and sustainable manufacturing processes are at the heart of recent challenges in the field. In my research, i am interested to contribute to more sustainable energy storage solutions by providing deep understanding of novel materials properties including their degradation mechanisms. Understanding the key drivers of aging can unlock mitigation strategies and new concepts for more sustainable batteries in the future. For instance, we are collaborating on research on CRM-free or PFAS-free systems.
