About WISE

WISE (Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability) is the largest investment in materials science ever in Sweden and includes major investments at the leading universities in Sweden. The vision is a sustainable future through materials science.

The program is a collaboration between Chalmers University of Technology (CTH), Royal University of Technology (KTH), Linköping University, Luleå University of Technology, Uppsala University, Stockholm University, Lund University, as well as with selected research groups at University of Gothenburg, Karlstad University, Umeå University and Örebro University.

Through collaborations with industry and society, WISE will promote and activate a transition towards a sustainable society and at the same time advance the scientific frontier in materials science, which establishes Sweden as a leading nation in the field.

WISE is financed by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation and the total budget for the WISE program is close to SEK 3 billion during 2022–2033.

Vision

A sustainable future through materials science

Mission

Perform materials science research at the international forefront to empower sustainable technologies with positive impact on society and to train future leaders in society, industry, and academia.

Goals

Our goal is to promote transition towards a sustainable society and establish Sweden as a leading nation in the field. WISE explores advanced functional materials targeting specific thematic areas. Learn more about our research here.

Sustainability Mission

Our pursuit of progress has harmed the planet, with resource depletion, pollution, and biodiversity loss. Urgent action is needed to address irreversible climate changes. Learn more about WISE’s full sustainability mission.

Impact

WISE, the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability, is the largest-ever investment in materials science in Sweden and is financed by Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation. WISE is now investing 500 million SEK (45 million Euro) for equipment and infrastructure at seven universities in Sweden to establish a national infrastructure for research into sustainable materials. This is the largest investment in material science in Sweden. Learn more about WISE Research Technology Platforms.

Faculty and research constellations

WISE is primarily based at seven of Sweden’s foremost research universities, which together form a complete and complementary knowledge base to successfully execute the core activities in research and education.
