Research question

We will study the intercalation of CaII/MgII ions into these promising PBAs for multivalent ion batteries, and the effect of water on the intercalation process. These fundamental questions directly translate to the performance, long-term stability, and capacity of the electrodes. Hence, this is a prerequisite for the development, optimization, and ultimate application of these systems in multivalent ion batteries.

Sustainability aspects

Li-ion batteries are at the core of the green revolution, yet the scarcity of Li and the need for toxic elements (i.e. Co) are problematic. In addition, there are severe ethical and environmental concerns regarding the mining of Co. Our study focuses on materials with potential to enable earth-abundant and non-toxic MgII and CaII ions without the need for Co, which will contribute to making energy storage safer and more affordable for the global population.
