Strain engineering of High-TC thin films for clean energy

Research question

This project aims to explore substrate-mediated strain control in YBCO films with the goal of increasing the superconducting properties of YBCO, such as the critical temperature and upper critical field. To achieve this goal, we will employ a novel strategy rooted in band engineering to control and suppress local orders competing with superconductivity. This approach will effectively create new materials and it will possibly allow the synthesis of superconductors operating at room temperature.

Sustainability aspects

Superconductivity, where an electric current is transported without any losses, holds enormous potential for green technologies. For example, if it could be made to work at high enough temperatures, it could allow for lossless transport of renewable energy over great distances. At the same time superconductors will play a major role in urban power supply.
