Alkali-stable ionenes and membranes for sustainable hydrogen production

Research question

The real breakthrough for efficient and sustainable large scale hydrogen production relies on the development of new anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with sufficient performance and chemical stability to enable alkaline AEM electrolyzers. Molecular design and synthesis of new classes of cationic ionenes and membrane materials will lead the way.

Sustainability

Large-scale implementation of AEM electrolyzers will allow hydrogen production at reduced cost, improved energy efficiency and higher durability compared to today’s conventional systems.  Especially, AEM electrolyzers do not require expensive and scarce elements such as iridium, ruthenium and platinum.
