Non-toxic antifouling coatings based on metal-organic frameworks

Research question

In this project, we aim to develop a technology that could offer sustainable, effective, and long-term protection of marine surfaces against biofouling. To do this, we will combine so called metal-organic frameworks with degradable polymers and some natura molecules used by sea organisms to prevent bacterial attachment. 

Sustainability aspects 

By replacing the harmful antibiofouling coatings with non-toxic ones, our coatings would ensure that sea life would not be damaged, and the marine ecosystem would become more sustainable. If our antibiofouling coating is effective, and implemented broadly, it could reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from maritime transport by up to 600 megatons per year.
